Advertising!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tuS7Yap0KY (Great commercial)

For years, advertising has been around. It's always been quite controversial, however, people always disagree on what's appropriate and what isn't for airing. There are a few things that make an advertisement effective. A good commercial or advertisement has to have some sort of appeal. Whether it be sexual appeal, or taste (making something look better than it most likely is), or such as the iPhone, making cool features that are displayed prominently on the commercial to make people want to purchase said item.
I chose the Kiss Dr. Pepper commercial for a few reasons. My initial reaction to it was laughter, it's entertaining. This being an extremely important feature in any successful advertisement. It made me laugh, and I remembered it. The catchy song and interesting setting made it a memorable, and well-produced advertisement. Also, it was a celebrity endorsement, which is an attention grabber for most people. For this commercial, besides celebrity endorsement, they used the catchy jingle tactic. The tune gets stuck in your head for hours until the point where it's almost obnoxiously annoying. You'll be walking down the streets singing "Call me Dr. Loveeeee!" and this is almost guaranteed to get you some extremely awkward glances from people around you.
The commercial makes Dr. Pepper look extremely refreshing, and very tasty. I personally think this commercial was a great way for Dr. Pepper to get noticed and chosen over its competition sodas. I mean come on, what other commercial has a bad ass band PLUS midgets?! Truthfully, I don't drink soda what so ever, but this commercial made me want a Dr. Pepper! :)

  1. Hey Holly,
I love your commercial, it was so funny. I actually do not like Dr. Pepper, but if I saw this commercial before I knew that I would want to try it out. I agree with you about how having celebrities catch people's attention to watch the commercial. I think jingles really help commercials out too; they always get stuck in my head. The best commercials are the ones that are the most memorable. These commercials also bring the most money to their product. I think we are really persuaded about what to buy depending on the commercials. The commercial had a good band to make them noticed. I will see you in class tomorrow.

  2. I love this commercial! I don't drink soda either, but if I had to choose a soda it would be Dr. Pepper. I think its funny how in the beginning of the commercial he rips the top of the can off ... like everyone can do it. When he says "Trust me, I'm a doctor", it’s almost convincing because everyone trust doctors. Commercials are tricky that way, they know people trust doctors and will most likely always do what they say, so advertising figures if you bring that into your product people will buy it because "the doctor says it’s OK". The jingle is catchy too; it’s stuck in my head now after watching that video!

  3. I actually remember seeing this commercial for the first time and experiencing the same initial reaction that you did. It was extremely appealing in regards to the catchy jingle that was played loud and clear plus the big time rock star genius singing while holding a Dr. Pepper in his hand. The advertisement is not only persuading people to purchase this soda product, but it also captures the entertainment aspect by using a “baby boomer” celebrity endorsement to entice that generation to take the time to sit and watch that commercial. Who doesn’t like KISS?! I don’t care for soda too much either. I enjoyed reading your opinion on this advertisement.

  4. hey Holly!
Hahaha I definetly feel you on the being sarcaastic and funny with writing :) Making things interesting makes everything better! I loved the Kiss Dr. Pepper commercial, I thought it was funny and entertaining. Not to mention Kiss is awesome! I agree with you that people always try to emphasize the better sides to their products to make them seem more interesting. Probably because everyone will be so drawn to them and not even think about bad possibilities. Though when advertising something as awesome as Dr. Pepper, I think bragging rights are allowed :)

  5. THIS COMMERCIAL. Wow, so much to look at - so much going on. I really dislike the taste of Dr. Pepper, but their commercials are always very appealing. Having a legendary group like KISS join their advertising was a smart move for them. They can appeal to an older crowd, while also keeping the commercial entertaining enough to appeal to a younger audience. They definitely have the right idea in mind with their advertisements. Great job on this - I'll see you in class tomorrow.

  6. Hey Holly!(:
I loveeee Dr. Pepper. It's my favorite soda. I practically live off of it. I guess when you love a product, you love the advertisments it has. I loved the Kiss Dr. Pepper commercials. I love the band, KISS too! haha. Its just really funny to see a hardcore rock band in a soda commercial. They're pretty old now too so its funny that they're even in Dr. Pepper commercials. I love KISS's music so the commercial is pretty enjoyable.
